The plate on the concrete vent to the right of the lid held the GZI or Ground Zero Indicator.

According to a website I found, that was basically a pinhole camera used to record the nuclear flashes, I guess so that the Observers could work out whether Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield or Manchester had just been fried.

You'd hardly think they'd need a camera.
