Derwent Village

Derwent VillageA view of the lane that used to lead down to Derwent village. The 3 children on the right are the Bingham children Lisa, Ethel and George who used to live in Derwent village. George eventually ran the post office in Derwent village and Ethel was a teacher at Derwent School.

They're sitting outside the gate that leads to the front of the old Catholic school which is still there to this day although it's not used as a school anymore.

The scene is only a few hundred metres away from the village site (though now underwater). The lane has changed little in the 100 years since this photograph was taken and can still be followed right down to the water's edge. In drought conditions the rest of the lane and sometimes the village re-appears.

Date: sometime 1904 to 1909.
