Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. Terrace Road, Buxton. (Tel: 01298 24658) Explore the Wonders of the Peak gallery, discovering the geology, archaeology and history of the Peak District through seven time zones. Enjoy the changing programme of exhibitions of art, craft, local history and photography. Open Tuesday-Friday 9.30am-5.30pm, Saturday 9.30am-5pm, Sunday 10.30am-5pm.

Buxton Opera House. Water Street, Buxton. (Box Office Tel: 01298 72190) A beautiful Edwardian theatre built and designed by Frank Matcham in 1903, produces an annual programme of dance, comedy, music, opera, drama, children's shows and traditional family pantomime.

Buxton Pavilion Gardens. (Tel: 01298 23114) Established in 1871 by Edward Milner, pupil of Sir Joseph Paxton, these 23 acres of Victorian landscaping on the banks of the River Wye include a Winter Garden, octagonal iron and glass Concert Hall and the spa swimming pool. Using a £3.3m lottery grant, the gardens are being restored to their former glory. The new bandstand is part of this work. Restaurant, lounge bar, self-service cafeteria and coffee shop open 10am-5pm.

Buxton Spa Swimming Pool. (Tel: 01298 26548) Cavendish Arcade Thermal Baths, Buxton Speciality shopping arcade, featuring original plunge bath, chair and Minton tiling plus a new stained glass vaulted roof by Brian Clarke.

Poole's Cavern. Buxton Green Lane, Buxton. (Tel: 01298 26978) Formed naturally from the local limestone millions of years ago, extends 300 metres into the hillside. Explore spectacular crystal formations, marvel at the longest stalactite in Derbyshire, wonder at the unique 'poached egg' stalagmites.
