Castleton Tourist Information

Peak District National Park Information Centre (Tel: 01433 620679) Open daily 10am-5.30pm.

Blue John Cavern. (Tel: 01433 620638/620642). The Blue John Cavern is home to eight of the fourteen known varieties of Blue John Stone, a beautiful and ornamental fluor-spar. Guided tours through the cave system reveal a series of magnificent natural water-worn caverns. Blue John can be seen in its natural state along with stalactites, stalagmites and huge caverns including the Grand Crystallised Cavern and the Waterfall Cavern. Open 9.30am-dusk. Admission charged.

Castleton Village Museum Methodist Church Schoolroom. Buxton Road, Castleton (Tel: 01433 620950) Unique insight into Castleton Village life through the ages. Open Sundays and Bank Holiday Saturdays and Mondays, 2pm-5pm. Also Wednesdays in June and July; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in August. Admission charged.

Peak Cavern. (Tel: 01433 620285). Below the remains of Peveril Castle, the first impression of the cavern is one of sheer size. The Grand Entrance Hall is the largest entry to any cavern in Great Britain, so large that a village once existed in it. See a number of large natural rock chambers, including the Orchestral Chamber with its remarkable acoustic properties. Open daily 10am-4pm. Admission charged.

Peveril Castle. Market Place (Tel: 01433 620613). Looking out from the Castle's snaking walls at a panoramic view across the Hope Valley, it is easy to see why William Peverel, son of William the Conqueror, chose this site for his fortifications. Steep drops fall away to the south, over the gorge of Cave Dale and to the east and west, providing a daunting array of natural defences and a breathtaking place to visit. Open daily 10am-6pm. Admission charged.

Speedwell Cavern. Winnats Pass. (Tel: 01433 620512). At the foot of the spectacular Winnats Pass, high above the village of Castleton lies the unique Speedwell Cavern. Take an incredible underground journey by boat, glide through the workings of a 200 year old lead mine and let the mysteries of the Speedwell Cavern unfold before you, including the "Bottomless Pit". Open daily 9.30am-5pm. Admission charged.
