Chesterfield Museum & Art Gallery. St Mary's Gate, Chesterfield (Tel: 01246 345727). The museum tells the story of Chesterfield from Roman times to the present day. Small art gallery, programme of exhibitions and events. Open Monday-Saturday (closed Wednesday and Sunday), 10am-4pm. Free admission.

Crooked Spire Church Church of St Mary and All Saints. Church Way (Tel: The Verger 01246 206506) Chesterfield's famous landmark, the 'Crooked Spire' is the largest church in Derbyshire. Dedicated in 1234, its 228 foot Spire 'leans' 9 feet 5 inches from its true centre. Church open all year Monday- Saturday, 9am-5pm. Sunday at service times only.

Hardwick Old Hall. Doe Lea, Nr Chesterfield (Tel: 01246 850431) Hardwick Old Hall is owned by English Heritage, it was the family home of Bess of Hardwick, one of the most remarkable women of the Elizabethan age, who during her lifetime embarked on several grand building projects to display her immense wealth and authority. The large ruined house, finished in 1591, lies on the crest of a hill next door to the stupendous 'New' Hall she built in the 1590s. Open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am-6pm. Admission charged.

Peacock Heritage Centre. Low Pavement, Chesterfield (Tel: 01246 345777/8) Early 16th century timber framed building housing a changing programme of exhibitions. Video about Chesterfield and its surrounding areas on request. Open Monday-Saturday 11am-4pm, closed every 4th week. Please contact for further details. Admission free.

The Revolution House. Old Whittington, Chesterfield (Tel: 01246 345727) Charming thatched cottage, formerly an Alehouse, named after the Revolution of 1688. Display of 17th century furniture, video, temporary exhibitions. Open 10am-4pm. Admission free.
