Wirksworth Tourist Information

Wirksworth Heritage Centre. Crown Yard, Wirksworth (Tel: 01629 825225). The 'Wirksworth Story' in a former silk mill. Local history and the customs of well and clypping explained. Open to the end June: Tuesday-Saturday 11am-4pm, Sunday 2pm-5pm; July, August, September: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 1.30pm-5pm. Bank Holidays including Mondays 10am- 5pm.

Middleton Top Visitor Centre & Cycle Hire. Middleton by Wirksworth (Tel: 01629 823204). Contains a restored beam winding engine, built in 1829 by the Butterley Company to haul wagons up the Middleton Incline. Engine house operating first weekend of each month. Admission charged. Visitor centre with information, books and videos on the Cromford and High Peak Railway, snacks, souvenirs and maps. Visitor centre open daily 10am-6pm. Cycle hire: 9.30am-6pm.

National Stone Centre. Porter Lane, Middleton (Tel: 01629 824833). Open daily 10am-5pm.

North End Mills. Cemetery Lane, Wirksworth (Tel: 01629 824731) Open daily, 9am-5pm (Thursday 9am-8pm). Hosiery machines operating Tuesday-Friday 9am-2pm, Saturday-Sunday 2pm-4pm.

Steeple Grange Light Railway. (Tel: 01629 580917 or 57759) Open 12 noon-5pm Sundays and Bank Holidays to end of October. Also openall Saturdays in July and August. Open for group evenings and week days by arrangement.
