Where to eat

Places to eat in and around Hartington

Devonshire Arms (less than one minute walk)
This is where we eat when we have a chance to use the Barn. You can either eat in the cosy pub rooms or use the smart restaurant room. We have always found the food to be excellent and plenty of it, they even cater for our fussy kids. It can get busy during the summer months and most weekends (always a good sign), but you can usually book a table a few days in advance. Well worth a visit.

Beresford Tearoom (less than one minute walk)
Good for a snack and lovely ice creams, open daily from mid March to the end of October, only open at weekends during the winter. The tearoom also accommodates the local Post Office.

Longnor Fish & Chip Shop & Tea Room (12 minute drive)
A short drive from the barn. If you fancy excellent fish and chips that taste just like the ones you get at the seaside this is the place to go. You can have a take away or spoil yourself and eat in, service is always very quick and it's good value for money. We love this fish and chip shop, the boys would happily eat here every week.

Places to eat in and around Youlgrave

If you can tear yourself away from the home baked meat pies and excellent meat from Hollands, the local butchers, you must try some of the local pubs.

The Farmyard Inn (2 minutes walk)
This is the nearest to the cottage and has a reasonable menu and the food is always good. On a weekend evening get there early as it can get busy and you may have to wait sometime for your meal as the service can sometimes be a little slow.

The George Hotel (8 minutes walk)
Good varied menu, large portions, this pub can a get a bit noisy at times.

The Bulls Head (5 minutes walk)
Good varied menu, large portions, this pub can also get a bit noisy at times.

Places to eat in Bakewell

Bakewell is about a 10 minute drive from Youlgrave and 20 minutes from Hartington. There is a pay and display car park behind the Farmers market. If you want to park for free, drive over the old bridge as if heading towards Eyam and turn right immediately after the bridge and head uphill towards the old station. You can park on the righthand side towards the top. You are then about a five minute walk from the town centre.

The Bakewell Pudding Parlour (opposite the chip shop)
Good meals at reasonable prices, they also do nice takeaway rolls (these are usually big).

Upstairs Café & Gift Store (opposite the Co-op)
The café is very clean and smart. Nice breakfast toasties, good coffee, varied lunchtime and teatime menus. It can get very busy as people tend to linger over their meals.

Sinclair's Coffee House (above Sinclair's China shop)
Great coffee and cakes.

The Tea & Coffee House (inside the Chappells Antiques Centre)
Nice cakes and good cup of tea while you look at the antiques.
